Do i need more powerfull video card ?

6 years 8 months ago #10 by Paul
Hello !
My current configuration is:
i7 8700k
32 Gb RAM
All drives are SSD
And the GPU is GTX-1070
When i encode videos from 1080p AVC 50p sources using Cinegy H264 codec my GPU is loaded up to 40-45% and CPU is loaded about 60-70%
The question is - should i upgrade my GPU to acchive more fast encoding speeds if the current is never go up more than 45% ???
Thanks!

No.

There is no point in that. The bottleneck is elsewhere - probably on the decoding source material in the timeline which done by the CPU.

The NVIDIA hardware encoder/decoder chip is the same no matter whether you buy a GTX1050, GTX1060, GTX1070, GTX1080 or higher.
The only speed difference would depend the clock frequency the board is running at. An overclocked GTX1050 can beat a GTX 1070 if we are solely looking at this function.

To test the real potential - take that source clip - convert it to DANIEL2 - then use the DANIEL2 encoded clip as source and to the H.264 or HEVC encode.
No you should see a much higher throughput. If not, then the bottleneck is somewhere else and your system needs further tuning.

Yes i tryed to convert the sources to DANIEL 2 before editing.
Sure it is pleasure to edit in montage codec format and the final rendering speeds are 2.2 times faster than on regular AVC files out of the DSLR .
But for me time and space on HDD is also critical.
DANIEL2 codec is not an option in my case .
Like all montage codecs DANIEL2 uses very high bitrates.
